“She was brought into this world, out of a beautiful mistake, when her mom was just a girl, and her daddy didn’t stay, she was working at age 9, at the flower shop in town…she was young, but not naïve, always wise beyond her years, hoping that no one would see every time she dried her tears.” – Rose Garden
Nick Jonas sat down and took a deep breath before he started writing. As he put his pen to paper, all of his emotions came pouring out. Hours later, “Rose Garden” was written. Although Nick doesn’t refer to Selena Gomez by name in the song, the lyrics show a stark comparison to her life. Like the girl in the song, Selena’s mom had her young and soon after, her parents split. Also, Selena started working at a young age on Barney, calls herself “an old soul” and has told us that she loves roses. “’Rose Garden’ is one of my favorite tracks,” Nick tells M. “It is inspired by a true story. The rose garden was this young girl’s safe place. I thought I was cool that she ran to this place to feel safe.”
Nick played another new song, “Last Time Around” for M, and it was clear that Selena was the inspiration once again. “Don’t forget the fun we had last summer, when the grass was greener and your hair was longer,” he sang. Nick has regret in his heart: He dated Selena last year before she got her haircut and things were better between the two. Hopefully, Nick’s public apology will help Selena to forgive him and he can let go of his guilt. “These songs came pouring out of me,” Nick tells M. They’ve been on my mind for awhile.”
